Abstract

The development of marine tourism in Indonesia holds great potential to boost local economies, yet many coastal areas still lack adequate supporting facilities, including Puru Beach in West Amarasi, which remains underdeveloped despite its rich landscape, underwater ecosystems, and diverse tourism activities. This design research aims to create supporting facilities for the Puru Beach marine tourism area that enhance visitor comfort, generate economic opportunities for the community, and strengthen local identity through a tangible metaphor architecture approach inspired by natural elements like ocean waves, swells, and beach contours. The methods employed include gathering physical and non-physical data via field observations, literature reviews, comparative studies of similar sites, and interviews with local managers and residents, followed by analysis of spatial programs, site conditions, zoning, circulation, and design synthesis translated into spatial concepts, massing, structure, materials, and visual elements. The results yield an integrated arrangement of primary, secondary, and tertiary zones, featuring main facilities such as beach recreation areas, cottages, amphitheaters, restaurants, cafes, souvenir kiosks, and playgrounds, alongside support facilities like management offices, parking areas, prayer rooms, and utilities, all designed with a modified grid circulation pattern resembling wave flows. Mass forms, roofs, artificial topography, and the selection of natural materials like bamboo, wood, and stone are crafted to deliver iconic spatial character that is contextual to the coastal environment, climate-responsive for tropical conditions, and supportive of environmental sustainability, ultimately poised to elevate Puru Beach's tourism appeal while fostering community involvement and welfare.
