A Case Report of Penile Carcinoma Effectively Treated by Partial Penectomy: How Early Diagnosis Led to Good Patient’s Outcomes
Abstract
Penile carcinoma is a rare type of malignancy. The most common type of penile carcinoma is squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Penile SCC can have poor overall prognosis, but good patient’s outcomes can be expected with early diagnosis and treatment. This is a case of a 43-year-old man that presented to the hospital in a low-resource setting with a penile ulcer persisting on the tip of the penis since three months before hospital admission. The lesion started out as a papule that has been present since one year before admission. The lesion appeared recurrently until three months ago when it started to persist, become ulcerated, and increase in size progressively despite being treated with antibiotics and other self-medication that was not specified by the patient. There were no complaints of poor quality of life and sexual performance. On physical examination, there was an ulcerated mass with a nodular floor and raised edges. No inguinal nodes were palpable. Biopsy specimens results were suggestive of penile SCC. Patient was effectively treated with partial penectomy without radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Patient was discharged without any complaints of poor quality of life and sexual performance. Early diagnosis and treatment of penile SCC need to be emphasized to ensure good patient’s outcomes.
