ANALISIS KOHESI GRAMATIKAL PIDATO POLITIK SOEKARNO DI DEPAN SIDANG UMUM PBB 1960
Abstract
This study aims to analyze the use of grammatical cohesion in Soekarno’s political speech at the 1960 United Nations General Assembly. Grammatical cohesion is a crucial aspect of discourse that involves cohesive devices such as substitution, ellipsis, reference, and conjunction, which contribute to the coherence of the text. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed in this study with data collection techniques involving observation and note-taking. The data were analyzed using the grammatical cohesion theory developed by Halliday and Hasan (1976). The analysis results indicate that cohesive devices, particularly references, dominate Soekarno’s speech by establishing patterns of use that create logical connections and coherence between ideas in the discourse. Moreover, substitution and ellipsis are employed to avoid repetition, thus enhancing efficiency and style. Meanwhile, conjunctions structure the argumentative flow, reflecting a strong rhetorical strategy. This study concludes that the effective use of grammatical cohesion in Soekarno's speech not only strengthens the text's cohesion but also emphasizes political messages in a clear and persuasive manner. The findings contribute to understanding the role of grammatical cohesion in constructing a convincing political discourse.
