KEKERASAN BERBASIS GENDER: TELAAH TEORITIS “KAWIN TANGKAP” DALAM BUDAYA SUMBA (NTT)

Abstract

Cultural violence is one of the violence based on culture. This type of violence uses culture as an excuse for conducting
violence against women. This study aims to examine culture as one of the reasons to exercise violence against women as in
“kawin tangkap”that happened in Sumba. Literature review is used in this study to explore the source of cultural violence such as
patriarchy. The theory used in this study is by John Galtung, where he categorizes violence into three parts, they are physical
violence, structural violence and cultural violence. Indonesia protects the rights to exercise and develop one’s culture. However
negclecting women’s rights in an imbalance power relation within an ethnical or cultural group is not justified. Violence on the
basis of culture is harmful to women and it is everyone’s responsilibity to stop and to strive to end cultural violence.
