Abstract

Traditional markets play an important role in supporting the local economy in East Manggarai Regency. Pasar Rakyat Borong, as the main trading center, faces several issues such as limited capacity, disorganized zoning, inefficient circulation, and the lack of a strong local architectural identity. These conditions reduce the comfort and attractiveness of the market.

This study aims to redesign Pasar Rakyat Borong using an Iconic Architecture approach that enhances functionality while strengthening local cultural identity. The method includes literature review, field observation, and user needs analysis. The proposed concept, “Pasar Mbaru Niang,” adopts the form of traditional Manggarai houses, applies a spiral circulation inspired by traditional weaving patterns, and utilizes Songke motifs as façade elements.

The design is expected to create a more organized, comfortable, functional, and culturally distinctive market, thereby improving environmental quality and boosting the local economy.
