Abstract

The sustainable architecture approach is a design framework that considers the balance between environmental, social, economic, and overall construction processes in order to create adaptive and sustainable buildings. In its application, this approach is guided by five main principles proposed by Jason F. McLennan, namely Respect for Process, Respect for Natural Systems, Respect for Energy and Natural Resources, Respect for People, and Respect for Place, which serve as the foundation for building design and development. This study aims to examine and explore the implementation of these five principles in the design of a Center of Excellence at the University of Nusa Cendana as a hub for research, innovation, and technology-based collaboration. The research method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method with a conceptual analysis approach to sustainable architectural principles integrated into the building design. The results indicate that the implementation of these five principles can be realized through: Respect for Place (building forms that follow land contours through split-level design and elevated structures); Respect for Natural Systems (integration of buildings with the landscape through green façades, rooftop gardens, and rainwater harvesting systems); Respect for Energy and Natural Resources (compact and climate-responsive building forms with north–south orientation, light shelves, and skylights); Respect for People (thermal and visual comfort through atriums, courtyards, and clerestory windows); and Respect for Process (modular and flexible building forms using prefabrication systems and adaptive structural grids).
Therefore, the design of a sustainable architecture-based Center of Excellence not only results in an efficient and environmentally friendly building but also creates an innovative learning ecosystem that enhances students’ competitiveness and supports the vision of the University of Nusa Cendana as a globally oriented university in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
