Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Jurnal Communio: Jurnal Jurusan Ilmu Komunikasi is committed to promoting the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in scholarly publishing. This policy applies to authors, reviewers, and editors.

1. Responsible Use of AI by Authors

Authors may use generative AI tools to support language editing, grammar correction, translation, and other appropriate manuscript preparation activities, provided that the intellectual contribution, critical analysis, and scholarly interpretation remain the responsibility of human authors.

The use of AI does not relieve authors of their responsibility for the originality, accuracy, validity, and integrity of their manuscripts.

2. AI Authorship

Generative AI tools, including ChatGPT and other large language models, must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for scholarly work or meet established authorship criteria.

3. Disclosure of AI Use

Authors must disclose any substantive use of generative AI in manuscript preparation, data processing, analysis, interpretation, or the creation of visual materials.

The disclosure must identify the AI tool, its purpose, and the extent of its use. Where AI forms part of the research methodology, its use must also be described in the Methods section.

Routine spelling and grammar checks that do not materially affect the scholarly content do not require a separate declaration.

4. Research Integrity and Data Accuracy

Authors must verify all AI-assisted content, including references, citations, quotations, analytical results, and factual claims.

The use of AI to fabricate research data, invent references, manipulate findings, or misrepresent research evidence is strictly prohibited.

5. AI-Generated Images and Visual Materials

The use of AI-generated images, figures, or illustrations must be disclosed. Authors must ensure that such materials comply with applicable intellectual property, licensing, research integrity, and ethical requirements.

AI-generated or AI-altered materials must not be presented as authentic research evidence.

6. Use of AI by Reviewers and Editors

Reviewers and editors must protect the confidentiality of manuscripts submitted to Jurnal Communio.

Confidential manuscript content and peer-review materials must not be uploaded to external generative AI platforms without explicit journal authorisation and appropriate confidentiality safeguards.

Peer-review evaluations and editorial decisions must remain under human responsibility.

7. Violations of the AI Policy

Suspected misuse of AI will be assessed by the editorial team in accordance with the journal's Publication Ethics policy and relevant Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidance.

Depending on the seriousness of the violation, appropriate actions may include requesting clarification or correction, rejecting a manuscript, or initiating post-publication corrective procedures.

8. Declaration of Generative AI Use

Authors who have made substantive use of generative AI must include a declaration in their manuscript.

Example:

"During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [name and version of AI tool] for [specific purpose]. The authors reviewed and verified the AI-assisted content and take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript."

If no substantive generative AI was used, authors may state:

"The authors declare that no generative AI tools were used in the substantive preparation, analysis, or interpretation of this manuscript."

9. Policy Reference

This policy is informed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) position statement on authorship and AI tools and recognised principles of responsible scholarly publishing.
